A camera is an optical instrument used to capture an image through a small hole that allows light to reach a light-sensitive surface. Cameras have various mechanisms to control how the light falls onto the light-sensitive surface which is usually a photographic film or a digital sensor. Lenses focus the light entering the camera through the aperture (hole) which can be widened or narrowed to let more or less light in. The shutter mechanism determines the amount of time the photosensitive surface is exposed to the light that entered the camera.
